“Medium infantry.”
The Spearman is an infantry unit in League of Empires that can be trained at the Barracks. They are a good early cavalry-counter, but are weak against virtually everything else.
Spearmen cost no gold or other rare resources. These units can be massed easily and often cost very little resources. For the most part, they are useful for defending a location early in the game or countering certain enemy units but can be taken out easily by counter units that cost gold. Spearmen only require the most common resources which are more easily disposed of than other resources (usually wood and food).
When a player is using low cost units, they are usually trying to overwhelm their opponents with quantity instead of quality, or using them as cannon fodder to occupy the enemy troops to give the player time to create a more powerful army. Low cost army is also essential to long games without trade and on maps where gold is limited in quantity.
Spearmen are massed easily, allowing them to overwhelm enemy cavalry. They are useful in preventing early Cavalry charges, but against higher level cavalry they should be upgraded to the more effective and upgraded Spearmen. Players generally use this unit to defend their base against cavalry raids.
The Spearman line units are the second cheapest of all military units, tied with the Archer line, costing very few resources and no gold,
The Spearman line units are the only weak units and also only common infantry units that do not have any base pierce armor.
Spearmen deal bonus damage against the militia because it has better armor.
Spearmen are Tier 1 Infantry units that players will have access to after they complete the Tutorial. As well as having more weaknesses than strengths, strategic troops are best used when the player has the time to train them and house a large number of them along side their regular troops, as they tend to die faster in fights.
Heavy spearmen can be the backbone of the army and are well able to take on many opponents. Their war gear includes long spears, chainmail and round shields. They can withstand attacks by most cavalry, and the training they have received allows them to form phalanx and carry an attack to an enemy infantry line. Against skirmishers and other missile troops, however, they require some support.
The Spearman is one of the most basic units in the game. It is available from start of the game and serves as weak raiding unit in early game and as a counter to Cavalry units by having attack bonus against these units. This means that the Spearman shines in combat against Melee Cavalry units.
The Spearman also shines when player is running low on gold and needs a melee infantry unit, because it does not cost any gold.
Front-line defense
Spearmen have an ability called ‘Front-line defense’ which allows them to brace for impact against incoming cavalry when they are idling or attack moving. This ability stuns and damages the cavalry units who reach the spearman, while cancelling the charge effect of the attacking army. If spearmen are moving without attack moving, they will not brace against cavalry charges.
