The Archer is a light ranged unit in League of Empires that can be trained at the Archery Range. Archers possess an attack bonus against light units, making them the weapon of choice when dealing with lightly-armored units.

Tactics

Archers are extremely proficient raiding units in the game due to their ranged attack. With it, they can easily pick off enemy infantry such as Militia or Spearmen and have a significant potential to disrupt the enemy’s economy. However, they are extremely ineffective against all buildings, Cavalry, and Enchantress. Archers in early stages cost low food, allowing the player to stockpile food for advancing to the next levels.

Many early strategies can become more successful if supported with Archers as they can garrison in the attacking positions and increase the number of arrows fired.

Their ranged attack can also prove helpful when defending from an early raid. When garrisoned inside Watch Towers or placed behind a Wall, they can be very effective. The range, damage and health of Archers keep increasing as you level up your Archers.

In terms of wood, the units from the Archer line are the cheapest archers in the game.

The Archer line units are the only common archer units that do not have any base melee armor nor pierce armor.

History

The bow remained an important military weapon after the fall of Rome, although less so in areas of Europe covered by dense forests. Archers could fight from a distance, from behind walls or other cover, and from ambush. They were usually not decisive in battle on the attack because they could not physically take ground from the enemy like infantry could. They acted mainly as defensive troops and as light troops that disrupted enemy formations prior to the decisive moment when the armies clashed hand-to-hand. Archers were also very useful when both defending and attacking a castle.

The Archer is a single-target ranged troop unlocked with a level 2 Barracks. Archers are the first ranged troop unlocked in the Barracks, and the second overall troop unlocked in the game.

In League of Empires, Archers can be controlled manually in real time or put on auto attack and defense. If put on auto mode, Archers have no preferred target when attacking; they will simply attack the closest structures and weaponry. However, once they become aware of enemy troops, they will leave their previously targeted building and instead engage the enemy troops. Once all of the nearby enemy troops are defeated, the Archers will proceed to attack the nearest structure and artillery.

Strategy

Offensive

Archers are very weak when under fire but are ranged, and thus can attack over Walls. Their low health makes them vulnerable to nearly all defenses. This hindrance can be alleviated by placing them in several small groups so that one or a few hits does not kill all of your Archers.

Archers work well when deployed in large numbers. However, it’s a good idea to spread them out so that a Mortar or Fireballs or Grenades from artillery cannot kill them with a single-shot. This strategy is called an Archer Rush. Against lower level opponents, massed Archers can steal a large amount of resources, due to the relative lack of splash-damaging or multi-targeting defenses.

Another strategy is to try out dead spots. Deploy one Archer unit for each main structure or units of the enemy and see if you get hit by any defenses. With this tactic, you will be able to destroy a lot of structures and get a lot of loot without much loss. Additionally, you can go for the 50% damage and get bonus points by taking risks and destroying a few more structure and enemy’s army units in range.

Defensive

Like all low health troops, Archers are vulnerable to Spells; if your enemy successfully gains 2x power for the Spells they can wipe out most of your Archers with a single Spell.

Archers are killed in one or two shots by most defenses. Since most of the units are melee, try to separate your Archers to start destroying them army units before being attacked by the melee units.

You can have a maximum of 300 Archers at one time in on the battlefield until level 5. This number increases to 500 until level 10. And keeps on increasing as you level up in the game.
